Our 2009 Beirut Appeal

The situation in Beirut became so desperate that we just had to stage the rescue of two baboons and a mona monkey before we had all the resources to hand.

 Middle East Airlines stepped forward and flew the unfortunate animals to London where we urgently arranged all the paperwork, veterinary checks, importation documents and transportation to Wales.

Ring Automotive were also of great help by supplying video cameras and monitors to allow us to observe the animals constantly in the ambulance and so minimise the number of stops required.  

We still need help and support to build permanent enclosures for these animals and support them during their quarantine, where regular veterinary attention is needed. We then have to look after their special needs, for what we hope will be a long and happy life at Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary. Any financial contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and much appreciated.

Latest News:  We extend our thanks to Cousha and David Wilson of Debden who have held a party and raised the funds to transport Joey and Tubman to Wales.

 have arrived.

On Wednesday 18th of March we brought Joey and Tubman from Mole Hall to our sanctuary in Wales. The two old boys handled the journey well and here they are the morning after having just enjoyed a hearty breakfast.

Tubman was still a little tired, but they are both being very sociable with our staff and this suggests that they have coped well with their long journey. 

 A great heartfelt thank-you to our visitors and sponsors...  We have always been encouraged by the support that we receive from the public, but this year has been especially gratifying. Not only have more visitors come to see our animals, but they have been generous with their praise for the work we do and many have made a point of telling us how much they enjoyed their visit. 

The number of people taking us up on our "Walking with Wolves" and "Keeper for a Day" opportunities has soared and the reactions have been universally excellent. The number of people repeating the experience, or sending their friends, tells us how much our visitors have enjoyed themselves. Many of our sanctuary visitors took the trouble to tell us how good their visit was before they left and some also wrote to us afterwards to thank us again.

The appreciation shown in terms of donations, sponsorships, souvenirs purchased, volunteering and lots of other indications of how much people care has also been particularly evident. Our animals are our whole life at Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary They are what we are about, and you can be sure that they will always be the ones who benefit from your generosity. Without it we could not continue to operate.

Being told that you have enjoyed your time with us benefits the human carers at our sanctuary however, and helps make our work doubly worthwhile.

Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is in the Swansea Valley in the lovely Brecon Beacons National Park area of South Wales. Formerly a traditional Welsh hill farm, the sanctuary now rescues and provides a home for many types of unwanted animals, especially primates, such as chimpanzees, baboons, spider monkeys, capuchins and marmosets .  

We welcome visitors to see the animals and the work we do. A number of them have come from zoos and laboratories and some have suffered mistreatment and deprivation in their earlier lives. As they are not equipped for survival in the wild we can only endeavour to make the rest of their lives as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

Gift Aid Donations

If you have been good enough to sponsor an animal, contribute towards our animal rescues, or make any other type of donation to Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary since May 1st 2002, we would like you to confirm to us by letter or e-mail that you wish your donation to be treated as gift aid. 

By doing this you will enable us to recover tax under the Charities act. This can amount to a very significant 28 pence for every pound you donated, and our animals will benefit once more from your kindness. You just need to confirm that you are a UK tax payer and that you wish all donations from yourself to Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary to be treated as gift aid. There will be no cost to you, as the money refunded to us will be tax that we have already paid to the Inland revenue.

Our policy is not to breed animals for sale or exchange and to focus on rescuing captive animals in need, with a view to improving the quality of their lives. We regularly see dramatic evidence of how animals benefit from a loving, caring environment. Some are very nervous and exhibiting behavioural problems when they first arrive, but with the right care and attention they integrate with others and begin to interact socially with their carers.

Our carers get to know each animal personally and learn to respond to its particular needs. In return animals will often accept humans as if they were a family member.
