It was a sad day for us all when Neusi the chimp died. She was born on January 8th 1985 and died on her birthday seventeen years later, on January 8th 2002. |

Neusi,
meaning "The Dark One" was one of our first chimps. Her mother had
been born in captivity in America, where she became part of a project to
teach chimps sign language. We can only assume that she taught it to Neusi,
as she was the only one of our chimps who used so many signs to tell us what
she wanted.
Her mother had never been taught maternal skills however and she carried Neusi upside-down for the first five days after the birth. Only by her keepers bottle feeding her did Neusi survive her early childhood, and grow into the interesting character that we all came to love. Her favourite game was "Ring-O-Roses" and it gave her obvious pleasure. |

One day she was not well and we
suspected that she had suffered a stroke. The vet suspected that she may
have had a brain tumour and he arranged for her to have a brain scan at the
Animal Health Trust in Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately the stress was just too
much for her and she died during the procedure.
Neusi is buried close to the spot where she used to sit in the sun. We all miss her tremendously. |
