Ystradgynlais is a small town and the regional centre of the Upper Swansea Valley, with shops, banks, library and hospital (entrance shown bottom right). It prospered on the early iron industry when its Ynyscedwyn Iron Works (bottom left) was a technological leader in using anthracite to make iron. Its industrial heritage can still be traced, but it is now a more rural community and the lovely river Tawe (top right) runs through the town. The Tawe is now a clean clear river where fishermen catch salmon, trout and sea trout right in the town itself.

Ystradgynlais Male Voice Choir is well known and has travelled around Britain and overseas bringing the best of Welsh choral singing to a wide public. The town also has a brass band and, like many Welsh towns and villages, Ystradgynlais also has a strong rugby tradition. Ystradgynlais Rugby Club is the focal point of sport in the town.

Ystradgynlais welfare hall has a cinema and provides facilities for parties, events and meetings.
